'Mama It's A Girl' by Stella Damasus is an absolutely amazing and thought-provoking masterpiece about the challenges of being a girl child in Africa. It will inspire readers from Africa to dare to change the narrative in their individual communities.

I loved the resilience and grit of the female protagonist, Teno, as she, like Phoenix, emerged from the ashes of her trials again and again... new, energized, and determined to be more; determined that her daughter's narrative must be different from hers.

I sat to read this book and I couldn't drop it till I finished reading. It's been a long while any book had that kind of effect on me. Highly recommended!

My Review of The Kavanagh House by Susan Dayley.

The Kavanagh House is a very well-written mystery ghost story. The story is about a young girl named Parker who has supernatural powers. She moves from her grandparents' to her parents' new house- The Kavanagh house. The Kavanagh house is old and holds many secrets. Parker finds herself in the middle of it all. How she resolves these mysteries is chronicled in this fast-paced spooky mystery ghost story. I was drawn to Parker's life and her journey from the very first page of the book. I liked her very much as I could relate to her feeling of being different from others.

Nigerian Christian Literature Awards 2017 - Winners unveiled!!

 The National president of Association of Nigeria Christian Authors and Publishers (ANCAPS), Wole Adedoyin, recently unveiled the 2017 winners of the Nigerian Christian Literature Award (NCLA). 

After a review of the 2017 entries by the judges, awards were conferred on four books for literary excellence.

 

•  The Samuel Ajayi Crowther Writers Award for best Christian Fiction was awarded to Mrs. Mbadugha Chigozie Anuli for her short story collection titled Beyond the Trial.

•   Miss Akalonu Onyinyechukwu won the Mathew Ashimolowo Christian Writers Award with her entry titled Not Easy but Gainful Waiting.

• Udedike Chigozie emerged the 2017 NCLA Young Writer Award with his entry - Voice of a Suicide and other stories 

•   Saint Jimoh won the John Bunyan Prize for the best essay.

  You will recall that  the short story collection Beyond the Trial which was awarded the Samuel Ajayi Crowther Prize for best Christian fiction is the inaugural feature book of CambaBooks. The Beyond the Trial Book Tour organized by Creative Writing News was promoted on this blog last year. 

  The 2018 edition of the Nigerian Christian Literature Award (NCLA) promises to be bigger and better.

My Review of 'We Thought We Were Invincible' by Michelle Lynn

 

 

 I gave this a five star rating!

 

I enjoyed reading this Young Adult fiction very much. It tells the story of a young girl California and her twin brother in their final year in High School.It is a tale of self-discovery for California and I enjoyed taking that trip with her. I initially found the multiple POVs a little disconcerting but once I understood it, it became interesting to see things from another character's viewpoint as well. It gives an insight into the minds of young people growing up in discordant families and the reasons behind some of the decisions they make and actions they take. It deals with friendships, betrayal, reconciliation, bullying and forgiveness.  It had the right dose of mystery, romance and suspense in it and I am looking forwards to reading the sequel of this novel.

My Review of The Wizard's heart in Goodreads

I recently read a Fantasy novel titled  
Tales of the Zingari 
The Wizard's Heart by S.R. Howen.

This is an unusual genre for me, but it was a refreshing experience. One should step outside ones comfort zone sometimes and explore.

 The Wizard's Heart- Tales of the Zingari by S.R. Howen was a truly enjoyable read in a fiction genre that I am not accustomed to. It left me yearning for more. It is the story of a young 'misfit' princess Sorann who is struggling to understand and channel the empathic healing powers she has. When she fails her test as a healer, she is forced to undertake a journey with strangers to save herself from the punishment that is looming over her. One is drawn instantly to her character and her inner battles provide a connection for people dealing with their own personal struggles. Her journey becomes an adventure of self discovery and she finds herself questioning everything she ever believed in.


The story is well written and crafted with adventure, mystery, danger, suspense and a tinge of romance in the right proportions. The author toys with several possible endings to the story as Javert goes on his own personal journey of fulfillment of an old prophecy to save his people. I was happy with the ending S.R. Howen chose finally. The author writes very well, creating very vivid pictures of the scenery and events she is writing about. I will be looking out for more of her works. Readers of Fantasy and Paranormal fiction will enjoy this book.

The Necro-Files was a brilliantly written, fast paced, captivating paranormal fiction. I could identify with the main character's doggedness as a student seeking part time work to see her through college and the rejection she faced at her initial efforts to secure a job. Her desperation made her accept employment at a morgue. This was the beginning of her adventure into the supernatural world and unusual happenings in the morgue. I could hardly put the book down as I wanted to know if she would survive her ordeal at the end. The author C.L. Bledsoe explores the unknown in a witty, adventurous manner that is not horrifying, but extremely exciting. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a touch of the supernatural, mystery and a tinge of romance. Awesome read!

It was amazing!! Got my Five-Star rating easily.

Hi,
It has been awhile since I was able to write a blog post. I have been very busy and not free to do what I like to do a lot - write! However, I am determined to share my thoughts so I have been thinking about others things that control our actions and make us unable to do, or not stop doing the things we like or hate respectively.

Am I making any sense? I hope so.

I then thought of habits that are difficult to break free from because one has become addicted to them, or if you prefer this other word - accustomed - to them. So today, I want to share an infographic about how one can take some steps that may help to break free of any type of addiction!

My review of 1,100 Ways to Write Your Story by James Mascia

If like me, you are a writer, or a blogger, or both, you will know that one often need inspiration to know what to write about next. I read this book lately and got lots of ideas. Below is my honest review of the book:



1,100 Ways to Write Your Story by James Mascia is an excellent book loaded with ideas that can keep writers busy when they are experiencing writers' block, or if they need some inspirational ideas for their writing. I found the prompts diverse and inspiring and I found several ideas I could write about.  I recommend this book to writers and writers' groups who need some help with inspiration to write more, or to people keen on working on fresh ideas to practice on improving their writing skills

As I had a deadline to submit a short story for a contest, I thought this workbook might give me a head start. Did it do that? In a way, yes.

It affirmed some tips I had either gleaned from my foray into the writing world, or read in some other books - such as the the fact that the writer's subconscious is his best tool (page 5). I find that ideas pop into my head at inconvenient times and I struggle to keep abreast of them unless I write them down.

I liked the frankness and bluntness of the language in which it was written and the urge to take action, even if one was not in the mood to do so. It made a good read, but left me craving for more (the main text, I guess - which was referred to often in the workbook). I would have liked to review the book and not the workbook so I will try to get a copy of the book. I liked the brevity and the simple language in which it was written.

I recommend this workbook to writers who have read the book itself. Using the two books will be a lot more helpful than reading the workbook alone. I received a free copy from Story Cartel in return for an honest appraisal. This is an honest appraisal.

I have a dream

I find it amazing that children are born without the prejudices and bias that define our interactions as adults. The divisions and divides are just not there for them (at least in the early years of childhood). There is a purity about their connections and interactions that is so uplifting. Put ten children less than seven in one room with toys and watch them unobserved. Friendships and interactions are quickly formed. So where do they learn to draw lines in their interactions?

What do you know about Glaucoma?

Today marks the beginning of the World Glaucoma week!
It is a week set aside to create awareness of an eye disease which is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide.
Glaucoma is a name which is used to refer to a wide spectrum of diseases in which there is damage to the optic nerve., which is the nerve responsible for vision that connects the eye to the brain.

Glaucoma has been classified into various types based on  the structure of the eye (open angle or closed eye), age of onset, cause (primary or secondary) and this is a pointer to the fact that this disease is actually a spectrum of diseases.

The presentation or symptoms of glaucoma varies depending on the sub-type of glaucoma . The open angle variety of glaucoma is characteristically symptom-less in its early stages and by the time one notices a drop in vision, the disease is advanced.

It is therefore advocated that EVERYONE should have a comprehensive eye examination annually to detect eye problems especially glaucoma.
